Titling a Car in Missouri After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Missouri Department of Revenue sources
You have 30 days from becoming a Missouri resident to title your vehicle.
If it was titled in your name in another state for more than 90 days, no Missouri sales tax is due.
Step by step
- 1
Check whether you owe sales tax
No sales tax is due if you owned and operated the vehicle in another state for at least 90 days. If you owned it for less, you get credit for tax paid to the other state and pay any difference.
- 2
Get your out-of-state title
If your lender holds it, send them the Owner Out-of-State Title Request (Form 5834). If the lender will not release it, you can still get a one-year registration with their written statement and proof of ownership.
- 3
Get the inspections
Every vehicle previously titled in another state needs an ID/odometer inspection; a Missouri safety inspection counts. You need a safety inspection unless exempt, and an emissions inspection in St. Louis City or St. Louis, St. Charles, or Jefferson counties.
- 4
Get a statement of non-assessment
Your county assessor (or the City of St. Louis) issues a statement showing you owe no Missouri personal property tax.
- 5
Title and register
Bring Form 108, proof of insurance, and your documents to a license office. Pay the $8.50 title fee and $9 processing fee and registration by taxable horsepower.
