How to Gift a Car in Missouri

Last verified: October 2026 against Missouri Department of Revenue sources

No Missouri sales tax is due when a previously titled and taxed vehicle is given as a gift. The giver completes a gift statement for you.

Here is how to transfer the car.

Step by step

  1. 1

Get a gift statement from the giver

The person giving the vehicle completes a gift statement for you to present when you title it. With it, no sales tax is due.

  2. 2

    Get the title signed over

The giver signs the title over to you. If a lien is shown, you need a notarized lien release (Form 4809).

  3. 3

    Get the inspections you need

A safety inspection is required unless the vehicle is in its first ten years after the model year with under 150,000 miles. In the St. Louis area, you also need an emissions inspection.

  4. 4

    Fill out Form 108

Sign the Application for Missouri Title and License (Form 108), and bring proof of insurance and, for new plates, your personal property tax receipt or statement of non-assessment.

  5. 5

    Title within 30 days

Title the vehicle within 30 days to avoid the $25 penalty. Pay the $8.50 title fee, the $9 processing fee, and registration.

What to bring

  • Gift statement from the giver
  • The title, signed over to you
  • Form 108
  • Safety and emissions inspections, if required
  • Proof of insurance and a personal property tax receipt or statement of non-assessment

Official Notice & Statutory Disclaimers

Estimates only, not tax or legal advice. Verify with the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The 2026 decal amounts ($150 and $75) are worked out from RSMo 142.869, not a figure the Department of Revenue publishes.

Department of Revenue pages apply the tax to the price less any trade-in allowance, but its rule 12 CSR 10-103.350 says a trade-in allowance applies only to purchases from a dealer. On a private sale, the 180-day sold-vehicle credit is the usual way to lower the tax.

Local rates change each quarter. The range shown is for October to December 2026.

County personal property tax is not included. To buy new plates you also need a paid personal property tax receipt or a statement of non-assessment from your county for the prior year.

County & Local Tax Note: Missouri adds the local sales tax of the city or county where you live, not where you bought the car: 1.0% to 7.263% on the October to December 2026 motor vehicle chart.
