Titling a Car in Washington After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Washington DOL and DOR sources
You have 30 days after moving to Washington to get your driver license and register your vehicle.
A car you acquired and used in your old state more than 90 days before you moved is exempt from Washington use tax.
Step by step
- 1
Get your Washington driver license first
You must have a Washington driver license before you register. Driver licensing and vehicle licensing are done at separate offices.
- 2
Check whether you owe use tax
A private vehicle is exempt if you acquired and used it as a resident of another state more than 90 days before you came to Washington. Motor homes do not qualify.
A car you bought within 90 days of moving can owe Washington use tax at the 7.0% state rate plus your local rate.
- 3
Gather your title and mileage
Bring your current title to any vehicle licensing office, and write down the odometer reading before you go in.
If your bank holds the title, call a vehicle licensing office for its fax number so the bank can send them a copy.
- 4
Register and get plates
At an office you get your plates right away. By mail, plates can take up to 3 weeks. Not every office takes cards, so check payment options first.
- 5
Pay the fees
The title is $39.50. Tabs are $82.75 a year up to 4,000 lbs and $112.75 from 4,001 to 6,000 lbs. New plates are $50 each plus $2 per plate for reflectivity. Plug-in vehicles that go 30 miles or more on battery pay $225 at each renewal. Local fees vary.
