Titling a Car in Indiana After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Indiana BMV and DOR sources
When you move to Indiana, you have 60 days to apply for a title for each vehicle with an out-of-state title, or to submit a Request for Title (State Form 1014).
New residents are not charged sales tax to transfer their vehicles.
Step by step
- 1
Apply within 60 days
Apply for an Indiana title, or submit State Form 1014, within 60 days of moving. Otherwise the BMV charges an administrative penalty. You also have 60 days to get an Indiana driver’s license.
- 2
Get the VIN inspected
Bring the vehicle to the branch for a free VIN inspection. If you cannot, a law enforcement officer can complete State Form 39530, and may charge up to $5.
- 3
Handle a lien-held title
If your lender holds the out-of-state title, complete Form 1014 at a branch. The BMV requests the title and contacts you when it arrives.
- 4
Claim the new resident exemption
A vehicle bought, titled, and registered in your prior state while you lived there is exempt from Indiana sales tax (ST-108E, exemption 8, with the New Resident Statement).
- 5
Pay the fees
The title is $15. Passenger registration is $21.35 plus the $15 TIIF, and electric vehicles add $242 and hybrids $81. You also pay the yearly vehicle excise tax and any local vehicle tax.
What to bring
- Your out-of-state certificate of title (or Form 1014 if a lender holds it)

- Proof of address dated within the last 60 days, unless your license shows the correct address
