How to Title a Private Car Sale in New York
Last verified: October 2026 against NYS DMV and NYS Tax Department sources
When you buy a car from a private seller in New York, you register and title it at a DMV office and pay the sales tax there.
Here is the order to do it in, what it costs, and what to bring.
Step by step
- 1
Get the title and a bill of sale
The seller completes and signs the transfer section on the back of the title. If the vehicle has a transferable registration instead of a title, the seller signs that over to you.
Sign a bill of sale (MV-912 works) showing the year and make, the VIN, the sale date, the price, and both names and signatures. The original goes to the DMV.
- 2
Get New York insurance
You need proof of New York auto liability insurance. Register within 180 days of the effective date on your insurance ID card.
- 3
Complete the forms
Fill out the Vehicle Registration/Title Application (MV-82) and the Statement of Transaction (DTF-802), which reports the price for sales tax.
- 4
Register at a DMV office and pay
Sales tax is 4% state tax plus local tax, 7% to 8.875% in total at the rate where you live (8.875% in New York City).
The title certificate is $50. Registration is a 2-year fee by the vehicle’s weight (for example, $56.50 for 3,451 to 3,550 lbs), plus $25 for plates, any county or New York City vehicle use tax, and a $50 supplemental fee in the 12 commuter district counties.
- 5
Get it inspected within 10 days
You receive an inspection extension that lasts 10 days from the registration date. An inspection issued to the previous owner is not valid.
What New York registration costs
The registration fee covers 2 years and is set by the vehicle’s weight on the DMV chart:
- $26 for 1,650 lbs or less, rising in steps of about $1.50 to $2.50 per 100 lbs.
- $56.50 for 3,451 to 3,550 lbs, and $69 for 3,951 to 4,050 lbs.
- $140 for 6,951 lbs or more.
- A $32.50 minimum for vehicles with 6 or more cylinders and electric vehicles.
